Freebies: Security Software

Everyone needs protection from computer viruses, malware, and spyware. Two free security software programs offer protection from these threats: Avira AntiVir Personal and AVG Anti-Virus.

Avira AntiVir Personal anti-virus software works with both Windows (Vista, XP, and 2000) and Unix operating systems. It offers protection against viruses, spyware, phishing and malware. In addition to this protection, it has a rootkit detection module. This module scans for previously installed malware that cannot be detected conventionally. It also has a shell extension module that allows you to scan individual files with a right click of your mouse. The latest version introduces single click removal of viruses.

AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 works on the Windows platform (XP, Vista, 7). It provides anti-virus protection along with protection from spyware, malware, phishing, rootkits. In addition, it has a module called LinkScanner which scans web pages for malicious code exploits before they load in your web browser. One annoying feature according to CNET is the optional toolbar is takes over the new-tab page. CNET also reports that AVG Anti-Virus does not slow down the system’s performance. However, it does slow down the start up time of your computer.

Overall, both programs will get the job done. If you have a Trojan these programs will detect it and assist in the Trojan’s removal. Avira does appear to have an edge over AVG insofar as Avira’s anti-virus program does not significantly slow down start up time of your computer. Additionally, CNET reports that Avira is “at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira's AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around.” However, Avira does not yet support Windows 7.
