How to get up to speed on your computer skills

In this day and age, computer literacy is almost taken for granted. For those people that are not, it can be an intimidating challenge to overcome. This article will explain a few steps you can take to enhance your computer literacy.

The first thing you can do is take computer classes at your local community college. These institutions are wonderful for offering some basic classes on a variety of ways to use your computer. There are software classes and hardware classes. What class you should take will depend on what area you are looking to delve into. Most people, however, usually take classes in software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio or an entire suite of applications such as Microsoft Office.

If you do not have time for classes (and most of us do not), there are tutorials available for purchase or free on the internet. Whether you purchase CBTs (self-paced computer-based training) or Google your question, you will get a good starting point for furthering your knowledge of computers. WikiHow, HowStuffWorks, and eHow, are sites that will give you some basic knowledge of computers. For those that want to delve deeper, W3Schools and WebMokey are good resources for web topics (XML, HTML tutorials being one of the hot topics these sites cover).

Last, but certainly not least, is using the help file that comes with your computer software. These help files often offer search capability and, in some cases, even a tutorial on how to use the software. Even operating systems such as Windows have built in help and tutorials. Be sure to take advantage of what you can get for free before spending any money.

There are a myriad of ways to increase your computer knowledge. Formal classes, Google searches, tutorials, CBTs, and help files are but a few ways to go about this. Remember, the internet is your friend and will help you find a wealth of free information but be sure to verify what you find.
