From the University of Virginia comes Orioles Prospect No 23, Greg Miclat. Miclat starred as a Cavalier for three years before being tabbed as the Orioles fifth round pick in the 2008 amateur draft. He came to the organization with a reputation as a slick-fielding, slap-hitting shortstop. Most important to the Orioles, Miclat is a true shortstop, 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds. Anyone who watched the Orioles in the post-Ripken era knows that's something the organization sorely lacks. Now it seems the Orioles have quite a surplus at the position with Pedro Florimon Jr., 2009 draftee Mychal Givens, Dominican super-prospect Garabez Rosa, and of course, Miclat.Miclat is possibly the most polished of the quartet, although his performance this past season has raised serious questions about his bat..

His pro debut really shone a light on Miclat, especially as a hitter. Over the course of 17 games, he hit .305 with a decent walk-to-strikeout ratio, and three stolen bases. It was the belief within the organization that many prospects, Miclat included, could handle the jump to Low A Delmarva. Unfortunately, the 2009 campaign got off to a rocky start for Miclat and aside from a few decent streaks, he struggled for the duration of the season. In 400 at-bats, Miclat only managed a .228 average with an on-base percentage under .300. Like his debut season, his walk-to-strikeout ratio was reasonable, and he did make an impact on the base paths, with 25 steals in 31 attempts.

One thing lacking in Miclat's game, and don't look for this one to change anytime soon, is any sort of power. You'd have to go all the way back to his high school years to find the last time Miclat hit a home run. As a switch-hitter, though, Miclat can challenge hitters in a more multi-dimensional way Think Brian Roberts, but without any home runs. And although Miclat possesses the potential for 20 doubles and five to ten triples per year, the O's may be wise to try to develop Miclat along the lines of Chone Figgins. He was voted as one of the best infield defenders in the system, so they would be wise to use him wherever they can fit him.. In terms of baseball IQ, Miclat is a superstar, much the same way that Roberts is. He's a baseball rat who plays the game with everything he has.
